Finally giving the free agent running back the second chance he has been seeking in recent months, the San Francisco 49ers has signed Brian Westbrook, released by the Philadelphia Eagles during the off-season, to a one-year contract with $1.25 million guaranteed. The deal was inked just yesterday on Monday 16th August, 2010.
Last night on the official announcement of the deal between the 49ers and star running back, Brian Westbrook said “My No. 1 concern throughout the process was going to a winning team, a football team that was coached by a man I respect and a team that had a winning tradition and players that would be able to achieve that”.
Brian Westbrook further added “I think I found all of those things here in San Francisco. It was a long process but in the end I think it turned out well for me”.
Although it is true that 49ers have desperately been looking for a most prolific all-purpose running back since the end of last season and Brian Westbrook is certainly the one, however Coach of 49ers, Mike Singletary, made things perfectly clear with his would-be player, Frank Gore who is the 49ers’ No. 1 running back, saying “he is unlikely to change”.
But, as a matter of fact, that would surely be fine with Brian Westbrook as he still believes that he can be an every-down.
Brian Westbrook, who will turn 31 in this September, was released by the Philadelphia Eagles, a team with whom he played for eight consecutive NFL seasons, in February after an injury-filled 2009 season and since then he had been looking for a new team.
As per the details of her score card, Brian Westbrook has caught 426 passes for 3,790 yards and 29 TDs and also rushed for 5,995 yards and 37 touchdowns on 1,308 carries in eight NFL seasons.
