Earlier today on Monday 4th October, 2010 that Robert Edwards, the professor of medicine at the University of Cambridge who is informally known as the ‘father of test tube babies’, won the Nobel Prize for his pioneering work in the field of ‘In Vitro Fertilization’ (IVF), a life giving process in which the eggs are fertilized by the sperms outside the body.

The Nobel Prize distribution committee announced his name as this year’s winner of Nobel Prize for medicine by saying “his contributions to developing IVF represent a milestone in the development of modern medicine”.

The committee further appreciated his work by adding that Edward’s work and ideas should be kept in prior treating the infertility problems. Today, the IVF technology has led to the birth of about four million babies.

And besides all above stated reasons, another potential feature of IVF is that in far future the technology will be helpful to save human race against cancer by understanding how chromosomes are protected against degradation.

Last year the Nobel Prize in the same category was jointly won by three American researchers named Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Jack W. Szostak and Carol W. Greider. The three researchers shared the $1.4 million prize money for solving a major problem in Biology.

This year the Nobel Prize is solely won by the British scientist who will reportedly take home the prize money of approximately $1.5 million.

Robert Geoffrey Edwards, a world renowned professor of Physiology, was born on 27th September, 1925 in Manchester, England. Before visiting the University of Whales, Bangor to complete his undergraduate studies, Robert Edwards had served in the British Army during the times of World War II. Robert Edwards studied Animal Genetics from the University of Edinburgh and afterwards completed his Ph.D. in 1955 from the same university.

Best known as the ‘father of test tube baby’, Robert Edwards is the inventor of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF technology), which, according to genetics sciences, is a life giving procedure that helps eggs to get fertilized by the sperms outside a fertilizing body.

Robert Edwards joined the University of Cambridge in year 1963 where he successfully carried out his pioneer and all-embracing research in the field of IVF and facilitated the world with a potential solution for the infertility problem.

It’s not shocking news for one of the biggest medicine manufacturing and health care company in the world, Abbot Laboratories but it is more shocking for the mother who relies on Abbott Laboratories’ Similac to feed their infants.

Abbott Laboratories has issued Similac Formula recall 2010 and the reason behind the recall is the most shocking and unacceptable, the bugs were present in the place where the most sensitive Similac formula powdered milk was produced and the company found the bugs in the cans even.

The spokesman of Abbott Laboratories has stated that the company has found the presence of beetles in the production area as well as the Similac formula cans, so company has stopped the production and has issued the Similac recall of five million cans of 8 ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces cans packing.

The spokesman has also stated that the company contacted with the Food and Drug authority and informed about the situation and the recall.

The Food and Drug authority has stated the beetle’s contaminated powdered milk can cause discomfort irritation of the gastrointestinal tract that can cause the infant to lose appetite in case they are ingested.

The company has asked the users to contact on their website, www.similac.com/recall10 or contact on the hotline (800) 986 8850.

Similac formula recall 2010 has really raised questions not only about the company but about the efficiency of the Food and Drug authority.

As per the definition of this term ‘Albuterol’ found in the books of medical sciences, Albuterol, a prescribed medicine for asthma treatment, is used particularly for easing ‘Bronchospasm’ in cases like asthma and severe obstructive pulmonary ailment.
