On a day of high winds and classic five-set matches, world number one Rafael Nadal dispatched the fellow Spaniard player Feliciano Lopez in the final match at the US Open.

Last night on Tuesday 7th September, 2010 the Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who had already won the French Open and Wimbledon this year to lift up his total winnings to 8 major championships and now desperately needs a US Open title to shape up a career Grand Slam, won his 18th successive Grand Slam match after beating fellow countryman Feliciano Lopez by 6-3, 6-4 & 6-4 in the 4th round of the United States Open and finishing with an impressive ratio of 34 wins against 14 artless errors.

World No. 23 Feliciano Lopez and top seeded Rafael Nadal kicked off the battle around 11:08 pm (local time) Tuesday night and finished the gruesome battle at 1:16 am Wednesday. Nadal saved all four break points that he faced against Feliciano Lopez and didn’t even break once this year at Flushing Meadows.

While shining bright in the court after rather easily defeating Feliciano Lopez, the top seeded said “without health it is impossible to have a chance to win”. He further added “seriously, seriously, I really don’t know. I think it is just a matter of confidence”.

After the match, Feliciano Lopez said “yeah, of course, it’s difficult. You have to be awake. It’s a long day for Rafael and for me. But we knew it’s going to be like this”.
