United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Center—Yesterday New Zealand was spared an atrocious tsunami after a 7.8 magnitude quake struck off the Southern Island, the warning of tsunami was issued after earthquake hit the South Island at around 9:20 P.M, the warning was in effect for about 3 hours, population of Auckland and Wellington was advised to take security measure, however, other countries in the Pacific were not in the danger zone, aftershocks of 5.8 magnitude were recorded almost after 20 minutes of earthquake.

According to AP reports the earthquake was felt extensively all across South Island, Civil defense emergency measures were trigger in South Island and the residents of the areas were advised to stay tuned to their radio sets.

According to United States Pacific Tsunami Warning Center’s calculations the increase in sea level was recorded around 6.7 inches above normal in Jackson bay, the tsunami warning was issued after observing the reading, according to which a tsunami was triggered by the temblor.

Centre said the threat of a possible triggered tsunami was eliminated almost after 3 hours after observing no major waves were created by the earthquake; however, danger to boats and coast line structures was continued for a number of hours due to rapid currents.
