The World Bank said in a statement released Tuesday 17th August, 2010 that, it will forward $900 million of its existing loans to help the victims of ‘Pakistan Flooding’ in flood recovery, as the United Nations warned that many of those 20 million people, who have been affected by the disaster, have not received any emergency aid so far.
Aid agencies are extremely worried that diseases such as cholera will wreak havoc on Pakistan unless more international help is forthcoming. The amount of aid pledged by countries around the globe had so far been woeful and absolutely pitiful.
The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said that the international community’s response to the devastating ‘Pakistan Flooding’, which is termed as the worst in last 80 years and has severely destroyed the lives of more than 20 million people, has been ‘Regrettable’.
Criticizing other countries, he further added that a quarter of the aid which has already gone in the country for the victims of ‘Pakistan Flooding’ has come from Britain.
The International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, said “the international response to the floods had been woefully inadequate”. He is due to fly to Pakistan today.
According to the report prepared by the UN officials, Pakistan needs around £300 million to help it recover from the ‘Pakistan Flooding’.
Brendan Gormley, the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) chief executive, said “funds are continuing to pour in thanks to the generosity of the British public, but with the Pakistani government’s announcement that 20 million people are now affected, the need is growing”.
The (DEC) cautioned that the situation on the grounds of Pakistan is getting worse and worst!
