Proposition 8, a measure that added a new provision to the California Constitution providing that ‘only marriage between a man and a woman is recognizes or considered as valid in California’, was overturned in the state of California earlier today on 5th August, 2010 by a judge, who claimed that Proposition 8 was completely unconstitutional.
Thursday morning, Judge Vaughn R. Walker overturned the Proposition 8 as he ruled “equal-protection and due-process clauses conflicted with the proposition 8”.
According to the words spread by ‘The Hollywood Reporter’, the ‘Proposition 8 Overturned’ was actually fueled by several Hollywood figures such as Rob Reiner, Dustin Lance Black and like Bruce Cohen, who together encouraged attorneys David Boies and Theodore Olson to head the case.
Bruce Cohen described the ‘Proposition 8 Overturned’ as ‘a great moment’. He said “we were hoping that Judge Walker, when he heard all the evidence which we heard in court, would come to the conclusion that there is no doubt that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, but to have it be official and to see it…is incredibly thrilling and exciting”.
Even Ellen DeGeneres’ name was also included in the list of all those celebs, who went to their official Twitter accounts to celebrate the ‘Proposition 8 Overturned’ announcement.
He Tweeted “Equality won!” and his wife Portia de Rossi also wrote, “I am overjoyed that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California. This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all”.
