William Hafford Sharp, the brave man who remained in the shark filled water for four days after USS Indianapolis was attacked and survived during the World War II.
William Hafford Sharp died at his home at the age of 83 on Sunday.
William Hafford Sharp, the survivor of USS Indianapolis was living at Jacksonville for last many years. William’s daughter told and provides the details of the death of Hafford. She told that 83 year old William fell at his home and wounded his head seriously. He was taken to the hospital but didn’t survive.
William Hafford Sharp was just 19 year old sailor when his cruise, USS Indianapolis was attacked by the Japanese at midnight on 30th July 1945. Williams was one of those 900 men out of the total crew of 1196, who remained in water when cruise went under water around 460 miles away from Philippines.
The Navy forces remained ignorant about the incident happened to the cruise for four days and these people remained in the water accompanied by the deadly sharks without water, food and help.
Williams told the story in detail in an interview in 2008 that he was saved and pulled out by a Navy seaplane. He told that the seaplane was so much packed that he literally was fixed up by the Navy people with one of the wing of the plane.
Only 317 people managed to survive and Williams was one of them but this time on Sunday it went the other way, although he survived for four days by the sharks but a fell over was enough to took his brave life away from him.
